Why We Use a “Soft Start” to Begin Our Homeschool Day
Traditional school jumps right into worksheets and bells. But in our homeschool, we lean into a “soft start”…a gentle, flexible beginning that honors the energy in the room. Here’s how (and why) it works.
What’s a Soft Start?
It’s a slow, mindful transition into learning. Think warm drinks, drawing, puzzles, nature journaling, or stretching. No pressure. Just presence. Since her infant years Jamie has never been on a traditional sleep schedule. Her dad and I started work typically around noon and came home around 8pm. Due to that she would either try to wait up to see him or me. When we made the decision to send her to a private school for kindergarten…it was rough! Jamie hasn’t been trained for the 8am-4pm life. She flourishes moving at her own pace. Which let me just say is way too slow for me….but it works for her so I often have to remind myself to slow to her level.
Why It Helps
Kids (and moms!) don’t always wake up ready to go full speed. A soft start prevents resistance and builds connection. Jamie for example doesn’t want to be spoken to for at least 20-30 minutes after waking. She allows her brain to fully wake up, then she starts her day.
What It Looks Like in Our Home
We shoot for these times, some days it works and other days it’s an hour later.
- 9 AM: Calm music and free reading or play
- 9:30 AM Mindful breathing + a short gratitude circle
- 9:45 AM Lessons begin
Tips to Start Your Own
- Set the tone with soft light or music
- Give 2-3 sot start options to choose from
- Don’t rush…let the rhythm unfold
Homeschool is more than academics…it’s atmosphere. A soft start nurtures peace, presence, and a love for learning.
