Realistic Morning Routine for a Busy Homeschool Mom
The simple habits helping me create a calmer start to the day.

If you’ve ever watched one of those perfectly curated “5 a.m. morning routine” videos and thought… “Well…that’s nice, but absolutely not…”
Same. My mornings aren’t color-coded. I don’t wake up before the sun every day. I don’t meditate for an hour while my children quietly read books in matching pajamas. (If your kids do that, please tell me your secrets.)
Most mornings around here involve coffee, homeschooling, two girls with very different personalities, making sure to pick the correct cup or bowl for my toddler, and squeezing in work whenever I can.
And honestly? I wouldn’t trade it. After walking through breast cancer twice, I’ve realized my goal isn’t creating the perfect morning. It’s creating one that feels peaceful enough to enjoy. Here’s what a realistic morning looks like in our house.
Waking Up
I naturally wake up somewhere between 8:00 and 8:30. The first thing I try to do isn’t check social media. Instead, I drink some water. Eight ounces of lemon + salt water and another eight ounces just water. It sounds ridiculously simple, but staying hydrated became incredibly important during chemotherapy, and it’s a habit I’ve held onto ever since.
One of my favorite ways to make sure I’m actually getting enough hydration is adding Buoy drops to my water. (Affiliate Link, no costs to you.) I started using them during treatment, and they’ve stayed part of my routine because they’re easy, tasteless, and don’t require me to remember another supplement. Sometimes it’s the smallest habits that stick the longest.
Coffee Is Non-Negotiable ☕
Let’s just be honest. Coffee happens before productivity. The last few years I’ve been loving Everyday Dose mixed with a scoop of protein powder to make a protein coffee that actually keeps me full. (Affiliate Link, no costs to you.) They recently came out with a protein coffee. Which is also equally as delicious as the regular coffee.
It’s become one of those little rituals I genuinely look forward to. Not because it magically changes my life… But because it feels like taking care of myself before I start taking care of everyone else.
Planning…Loosely 😂
I’ve learned something about myself over the years. If I try to plan every minute of my day… Life laughs. Instead, I keep a simple planner with my top priorities. Usually there are only three. Everything else is a bonus.
Right now those priorities usually include:
- homeschooling (We only take off August)
- creating content
- editing videos
- writing blog posts
- doctor’s appointments (when needed, currently they are Monday-Friday)
- making meals
- trying to keep the house from looking like a tornado visited
Real life isn’t perfectly scheduled. And I think that’s okay.
Homeschool Begins
One of my favorite parts of the day is homeschooling. Some days go exactly as planned. Other days we’re learning multiplication while someone is asking for another snack and the toddler has somehow turned a blanket into a superhero cape. That’s homeschooling.
I’ve stopped chasing perfection there too. Instead, we’re building curiosity. Some days that looks like workbooks. Some days it looks like baking cookies together. Some days we’re outside looking at bugs. They’re all learning.
Creating Content During the In-Between Moments
A lot of people ask when I have time to blog, record meditations, film product reviews, or edit YouTube videos. The answer?
Tiny pockets of time. Nap time. Quiet time. Independent reading. After bedtime. Sometimes while dinner is cooking. I don’t have giant uninterrupted workdays. I build my business five, ten, or twenty minutes at a time. Progress adds up.
What Breast Cancer Changed
Cancer changed a lot about the way I live. It made me appreciate ordinary mornings. The sound of my girls laughing. Drinking coffee while the house is still waking up. The ability to make plans for next month. The opportunity to build a business I’m passionate about. I don’t wake up every day thinking about cancer anymore. But I do wake up grateful for another ordinary day. And maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts it gave me.
If your mornings don’t look Instagram-perfect… You’re in good company. Mine don’t either. Some mornings are productive. Some are messy. Some start with laughter. Some start with tears. Most start with coffee. I’ve learned that peace isn’t something we find after life slows down. Sometimes it’s something we create right in the middle of the beautiful chaos.
If today’s morning wasn’t perfect… Tomorrow is another chance to begin again.
