When Life Doesn’t Go Back to Normal (And Maybe It Wasn’t Supposed To)
There was a long time when I kept waiting for life to “go back to normal.” I thought cancer treatment would end, life would settle down, and somehow I’d wake up one morning feeling like the person I used to be.
It never happened.
Not because I didn’t heal. Not because I wasn’t grateful. But because life had changed me.
And maybe…it was supposed to.
For a while, I fought that reality. I wanted my old routines back. My old energy. My old confidence. My old plans. I missed the version of myself who didn’t think twice about doctor’s appointments, blood work, or the possibility that life could change overnight. I kept comparing the person I was becoming to the person I used to be.
And honestly?
That comparison was exhausting. Eventually I realized something. Healing isn’t a trip backward. It’s a journey forward. Not toward the life we expected… But toward the life we’re creating now.
That doesn’t mean I never miss who I was. I do. There are still days when I wish I could go back before cancer. Before the fear. Before everything became measured in appointments and scan results. But wishing for yesterday kept me from noticing today.
These days, I try to look for different victories. A quiet morning with my coffee. A walk outside. Creating something that might help another person. Watching my kids laugh. Planning a trip. Feeling excited about the future again.
Those things don’t erase what happened. They simply remind me that life is still happening.
I’ve stopped asking myself… “When will things go back to normal?”
Instead, I ask… “What kind of life do I want to build from here?”
That question changed everything. Because maybe “normal” isn’t the goal anymore. Maybe peace is. Maybe purpose is. Maybe joy is. Maybe simply being present is enough.
If you’re waiting for life to go back to the way it was… I understand. I’ve been there too. But I also hope you’ll leave room for another possibility. That the person you’re becoming might be just as worthy of love… As the person you used to be. And maybe… This next chapter doesn’t have to look like the last one to be beautiful.
